First World War portrait medal by Arnold Hartig commemorating General Baron Alexander von Krobatin (1849-1933), one in
a series of patriotic medallic tributes to senior Austro-Hungarian political and military figures produced by the artist during the war.
Krobatin was War Minister of Austria-Hungary from 1912 to 1917. An artillery expert by training one of the few successes of his period of
office was in the increased output of artillery that he made available to Austro-Hungarian fighting Divisions. The image of the artillery
piece (closely resembling the famous Austrian 'Schlanke Emma', 30.5 cm howitzer) on the reverse design celebrates his commitment to heavy
ordnance. Following the dismissal of his close ally Conrad von Hötzendorff as Commander in Chief, Krobatin was removed from office in April
1917 and given command of the 10th Army. He was promoted Field Marshal for his part in the successful Caporetto offensive of October
1917. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | First World War & 1914 = 1916 Weapons Alexander von AH.O & Austro-Hungarian War Ministry Krobatin portrait / personification Artillery | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Creator: | Hartig, Arnold | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
