Belgian First World War medallic commemoration by Armand Bonnetain (1883-1973) of two heroines intimately associated
with the Belgian experience of war and both of whom died in 1915, Nurse Edith Cavell and Marie Depage. The latter was the wife of Dr
Antoine Depage who was serving with the Belgian Army in the field. She went to America in 1915 to raise funds for Belgium but perished on
her return in May, as a passenger on board the RMS Lusitania on 7 May 1915. Edith Cavell was executed by the Germans on 12 October 1915 for
her role in assisting British and Fench prisoners of war, and Belgians who wanted to serve with the Allies, escape to neutral Holland. The
reverse text is translated as 'Let us never forget'. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | Edith Execution of & 12/10/1915 Atlantic & (RMS Lusitania commemorative Cavell RMS Lusitania Atlantic & RMS Lusitania German Occupied Belgium & Cavell Edith Louisa Depage Sinking of by U20) Depage portrait / personification Marie Death of & 7/5/1915 Sinking of by U20 & 7/5/1915 BE.O & École d'Infirmières Diplômées Brussels First World War | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Creator: | Bonnetain, Armand | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
