It is likely that this 1916 portrait medal by Elizabeth von Esseö, commemorates the coronation of Empress Zita (wife of
the 'new' Emperor of Austria-Hungary, Karl I ) as Queen of Hungary on 30 December 1916. The obverse text implores the protective
intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, patron saint of the Kingdom. The Amsterdam-based medal dealer Schulman identified the portait head
as that of "Hungaria" and gave this name as its title in his Catalogue LXXV (p 96, reference 886), 1919. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | Zita Austro-Hungarian Home Front & Coronation of Empress Zita as Queen of Hungary & 30/12/1916 portrait / personification Empress of Austria-Hungary commemorative | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Creator: | Esseö, Elizabeth von | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
