First World War portrait medal by Arnold Hartig commemorating Archduke Karl Franz Josef von Habsburg-Lothringen (1887-
1922), one in a series of patriotic medallic tributes to senior Austro-Hungarian political and military figures produced by the artist
during the war. As great nephew of Emperor Franz Josef, Karl was heir to the Austrian Imperial throne on the outbreak of war in 1914. He
took up a military liaison appointment in Galicia and over the next two years served in various different capacities and theatres including
that of Corps Commander on the Italian Front in 1916. Karl's military career effectively ended when he became Austrian Emperor on the death
of his great uncle, 21 November 1916. The following month Karl was crowned King of Hungary. The reverse text is translated as 'Austrian
Navy Association War Precautions'. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | First World War & 1914 = 1915 AH.N & KUK Tegetthoff Emperor of Austria-Hungary portrait / personification commemorative Karl I | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Creator: | Hartig, Arnold | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
