In this inspirational propaganda medal made in 1917 Elizabeth von Esseö employs formal symbols to express her
confidence in the strength of the Hungarian Kingdom to withstand the ravages of war. The warrior personification of Hungarian military
power on the obverse design is complemented by the Latin tag translated as 'I am superior to the enemy'. The reverse image of the two lions
in mortal combat offers an unusually oblique and distanced view of the true reality of modern industrialised armed conflict. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | Allegory First World War & 1914 = 1917 propaganda AH.A | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Creator: | Esseö, Elizabeth von | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
