In this portrait medal dated 1918 Elizabeth von Esseö pays tribute to the First World War service of the Hungarian
field commander, Baron Sandor Szurmay. Szurmay formed his own Corps in November 1914 and led it until 1917, when it was designated XXIV
Corps. He became chief of the Honved forces and in 1917 was appointed Chief of the Royal Hungarian National Defence Ministry by King Karl
IV. The medal dealer Schulman (in his 1919 Catalogue LXXV, p 97 - reference 895) refers to Szurmay as 'le dernier ministre des
Honveds'. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | Sandor (Baron) portrait / personification Szurmay Eastern Front & 1918 AH.A | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Creator: | Esseö, Elizabeth von | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
