It is likely that this elegant portrait medal by Elizabeth von Esseö represents a tribute to the life of Dr Ernö Petö
(and his association with the Austro-Hungarian Army's medical services). The contraction 'AET' in the obverse inscription stands for the
Latin word 'aetatis' meaning 'at the age of', thus it may be inferred from the accompanying Latin numerals that he died in 1918 at the
early age of thirty-two. The reference to Aesculapius, the Roman god of healing or medicine, is a clear reference to Dr Petö's medical
calling. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | AH.A & [medical services] Petö portrait / personification First World War & 1918 (?)
