Description: | HANSI 1917
design:central image with rectangles of text upper right and lower left. Dominated by Strasbourg cathedral in the
background, a street of mediaeval buildings decked out with French flags is the setting for a procession of French army poilus. They are
cheered on by a waving crowd and people leaning from the windows. They are led by a row of small children in Alsatian dress and a boy
carrying a French tricouleur with the slogan VIVE LA FRANCE . At the lower left of the image a man and youth in German civilian clothes
escape round a corner, carrying sacks (of valuables) and a clock.

The 'article 1' quoted in the poster includes a tribute to Clemenceau and Foch which was voted by the French
government on November 11, 1918 and it was decreed that it should be posted in towns all over France. However this poster is dated 1914 and
it is evident that 'Hansi' did the design as a picture of what might be, only to adapt and reprint it later when the French troops actually
did enter Strasbourg. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | processions Foch Georges E B peace / victory celebrations civilian morale military manoeuvres Clemenceau Architecture events / anniversaries Children Caricature Ferdinand J M | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Creator: | Hansi | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
