Sir Edward Grey (1862-1933) was a Liberal politician who served as British Foreign Secretary from 1906 to 1916. Prior
to the First World War, he instigated a policy of rapprochement with France, believing it would counter Imperial German expansionism. In
1907 Grey consolidated Anglo-French relations further by entering into a pact of mutual assistance with France and Russia, known as ‘Triple
Entente’. However, the agreement was formed secretly and it has been argued that had Grey openly declared support for France it would have
been a clearer deterrent to Germany.
During the War Grey’s often esoteric approach to foreign diplomacy, coupled with his gaunt, aquiline features, saw him caricatured in
Germany as a sinister, duplicitous figure. In Britain too, Grey’s secretive methods caused suspicion amongst both the Liberal and
opposition parties. He was eventually replaced during David Lloyd George’s Coalition Government, in 1916, after his opaque Balkans
diplomacy was widely blamed for Turkey and Bulgaria siding with Germany. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | politicians Animals civilian morale Grey portrait / personification Entertainment Advertising DE.O Marionetten-Theater Münchener Künstler cartoons Caricature WW1 German Home Front Edward | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Creator: | Marionetten-Theater Münchener Künstler | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
