Description: | Medal commemorating John Jervis, Earl St Vincent (1735-1823) and the Battle of Cape St Vincent, 1797. Obverse: Bust of the Admiral (left), hair long and tied with a ribbon. Full uniform with insignia of 'K.B.' Legend: 'JOHN JERVIS EARL OF ST VINCENT ADMIRAL OF THE WHITE.' Exergue: 'BORN JANUARY 26 1735.' Reverse: Recumbent female figure (Hispania) on seashore, leaning on Spanish shield, with motto 'PLUS ULTRA', from behind which a hare appears. A sword at her feet. Two ships of the line in action, the one jury-rigged. Legend (on a ribbon in two lines): 'WITH 22 SHIPS AND 1428 GUNS PERSUED & DEFEATED THE SPANISH FLEET OF 37 SHIPS AND 2600 GUNS'. Third line: 'FOUR SHIPS AND 382 GUNS TAKEN'. Exergue: 'FEBRUARY 14 1797.'
