Obverse: Within a rope and cable border, above, the 'Great Eastern' under steam and sail laying the cable; below, with the sea as background, the two coats of arms of Great Britain (left) and the United States (right), two ribbons inscribed below 'DIEU ET MON DROIT' (left), 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' (right). Legend: 'ATLANTIC . TELEGRAPH . CABLE . 1866'. Reverse: Within a border as obverse on a network of stars a tablet (uninscribed) in centre; above, two sprays of laurel tied with a bow; below, the arms of Liverpool, surrounded by a ribbon, inscribed 'DEUS NOBIS HAEC OTIA FECIT'. Legend: 'PRESENTED BY THE AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE . LIVERPOOL'. Four examples in gold were presented in 1867 to Sir Samuel Canning, Mr Cyrus Field, Captain Sir James Anderson and Mr Willoughby Smith.
