Description: | A high-quality plaster statuette of Prince Albert Duke of Edinburgh and of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900) by Gleichen. It is signed 'G./ 1871', and is presumably that exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1872.
It shows Queen Victoria's second son as a Royal Naval captain, wearing undress uniform of 1866-78, including the round jacket, and carrying a telescope.
Prince Alfred had an active naval career, including high command based on professional merit. He eventually became an Admiral of the Fleet but in 1893 moved to Coburg, Germany, when he succeeded his uncle as Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
The NMM also holds three busts by Gleichen (SCU0026, SCU0050 and SCU0069
