Description: | Head-and-shoulders marble bust of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson on a round socle. Nelson is shown facing forwards, in uniform of which little more than the collar is visible since a cloak is wrapped closely round his shoulders, overlapping from his left to right. A Naval gold medal is visible at the neck suspended under the coat collar.
This bust has been attributed to Flaxman since the inscription 'By Flaxman' is scratched on the back. It was presented to the Museum by Colonel W. J. Fernie in April 1946. In an extensive correspondence between Fernie and Geoffrey Callender, NMM's first Director, the Colonel said that a similar bust belonged to Mrs Nelson Weekes, a granddaughter of Horatia Nelson, and that there was a family tradition that SCU0104 might be a copy by Henry Weekes RA, although there was no mention of a Nelson being done in Weekes's sitter's book. When Walker investigated in 1980, there was no remaining knowledge of such a bust in the Weekes family. This bust is so different from Flaxman's better known version (SCU0090) that an attribution to him can only be regarded as provisional.
Collections: W C Renshaw, Bencher of Lincoln's Inn, then his daughter and son in law Col W J Fernie.
