(Morea like the leaf of a plane tree thus decorates the Venetian lion with laurel and palm, the strong cities of Patras and Lepanto having been captured from the Turks in twenty-four hours 14-24 and 15-25 July 1687, may these deeds be famous for ever). Inscription (on edge): 'REGNIS DOMINANTUR IN UNDIS' (They rule kingdoms and seas).
