Title: A view of Gosport seen Aaross Portsmouth Harbour at dusk [Go to resource]
Description: This sunset view across Portsmouth Harbour to Gosport is likely to have been painted after Wyllie and his family moved from the River Medway to the Tower House at the entrance to the harbour, which may be where the view is taken from. A more precise dating of the watercolour might depend on identifying the class of the battleship in the centre of the picture. The church tower, silhouetted beyond, is that of Holy Trinity, Gosport. The watercolour is a fine example of Wyllie's skill in rendering sea and sky in the medium, working as usual at this time 'in the wet', that is, applying the watercolour to wet paper and then modelling the sea, sky and clouds with a brush sucked dry.
