Description: | The Dutch Fleet tacking off the North Frisian Islands, 9 [OS]/19 October 1658. This would appear to be the seventh of a series of drawings connected with the Northern expedition of 1658 which culminated in the battle of the Sound. Sweden?s action in attacking Denmark and occupying both sides of the Sound, had halted the Baltic trade. The Dutch victory at the battle of the Sound forced Sweden to withdraw from before Copenhagen and the trade routes were reopened. Van de Velde was present on the expedition.
The drawing shows the time towards evening when, with the wind northerly, the fleet tacked to the westward with the ?Eendracht? (Van Wassenaer) shown bow view in the centre.
Drawing number 8 in the series is probably in the British Museum.
