Description: | Scale: Unknown. A full hull model of a Ichang sampan fishing vessel, carved from a single piece of wood with internal bulkheads and decking added separately. It is complete with two (slightly) damaged and incomplete woven straw sliding(?) roof covers, although the supports are missing. The hull is painted black, both at the bow where it meets the keel and around the opening at the stern, and represents probably a copper patch to protect the hull from damage due to grounding and wear and tear.
The model has two rowing and steering oars which could be worked over the stern or side. There is also a scale(?) painted figure which if correct, at a scale of 1:48 (1/4 inch : 1 foot) measures five foot 6 inches tall and therefore represents a vessel 42 feet in length by 10 feet in the beam. The model is packed in its original wooden travel packing case and inscribed Lt Cdr F T Boswell RN, R N Armament Depot, Hong Kong; $1 (Hankow); Ichang Fishing Sampan (twice and crossed out); personal property. The box is packed with folded newspaper circa 1975.
