The Somerset was probably about 148 feet long and 32 feet in the beam. It weighed approximately 948 tons, and carried between 50 and 60 guns. It was of a similar size and armament of a navy 60-gunner, but had a fuller hull for carrying cargo. It made two trade voyages to India between 1738 and 1748. In 1745 a letter of marque was issued that enabled it to undertake operations against ?ships, vessels and goods belonging to France and Spain?. It made two further voyages under this letter, to St Helena and Bencoolen in 1745?46, and to Bengal in 1747?48.
