Description: | A typically atmospheric etching of the Lower Pool of the Thames by William Wyllie. Astern of the spritsail barge moored to the dock far right is a cargo vessel, surrounded by lighters. To the left, a steam tug tows a lighter upriver. For another version see PAF2088.
Wyllie was born in London and knew the city, its river and port throughout his life. He owned and sailed a Thames barge which he converted into a floating studio. This helped to give him an intimate knowledge of the port, its people and its craft.
