Description: | Scale: 1:12. A working model depicting the steering gear on the battleship HMS Goliath (1898). The model is made in brass and steel and shows a quadruple wheel, steering gear, rudder, and steering quadrant. The model is attached to a shaped, stylised section of deck which is secured to a rectangular mahogany baseboard with bevelled edges. A part of the rudder is shown, cut off at the bottom with a small section of the ship's hull above it. The rudder stem pivots on two levers attached to the steering quadrant which in turn pivots and works a cog wheel. The quadrant and cog wheel are secured to a flat bed which is elevated above the deck section and held in place by four open bulkheads and a supporting column. Beneath the bed is a pair of large cog wheels linked to a drive shaft, which is in turn connected to further pulleys and cogs that can be worked by turning the quadruple wheel. Each of the wheels has six spokes, and twelve handles. A brass plaque, rectangular in shape with inverted quarter-circle corners, has the inscription "Model Harfields steering gear HMS Goliath Chatham Dockyard Scale 1 inch equals 1 foot 1901".
