Description: | A full hull model built at a scale of approximately 1:24 of a double-ended lifeboat proposed by Captain Marryat RN c.1820. It is designed to be rowed by 16 oars mounted on outriggers either side of the hull. It is built plank on frame with carvel construction, i.e. where the planks are butted together as opposed to overlapping clinker construction. Internally there are a number of gratings for the floors covering cork blocks for additional buoyancy. These blocks filled the spaces between the frames and exterior planking and would keep the hull afloat should the planking be damaged. Two planks either side of the keel have been omitted to show the cork blocks in position as well as the 14 tubes for relieving the hull of water when swamped. This model, together with a detailed illustrated paper was presented by Marryat to the Royal Society in 1820.
CA: BAC. Oars broken and missing.
