Description: | Scale: 1:12. A full hull model of the scaffie yawl 'Mary Ann' circa 1848. Built plank on frame, the model is decked, equipped and fully rigged with a single sail set. It is inscribed 'Mary Ann SY 1030' on the port and starboard bows and 'SY1030' on the sail. The equipment includes a rudder with tiller, a lobster pot and two pairs of oars.
The scaffie yawl was a singled masted, smaller version of the full-decked, two-masted scaffie, which was found in use off the west and south coasts of the Moray Firth as far east as Banff. It was the raking stern of the scaffie combined with the straight stem of the fifie which produced the ultimate in Scottish sailing fishing vessels, the zulu. See model of the zulu ?Muirneag? (SLR0009).
