Description: | Scale: 1:60. A contemporary full hull model of a 90-gun three-decker ship of the line (circa 1702), built plank on frame in the Navy Board style. Model is decked and partially equipped with a capstan, belfry and deck gratings. The limited decoration and position of the chainwales, above the middle deck ports, would indicate a date of 1702. This is also confirmed by the royal arms of Queen Anne, displayed on the figurehead and stern, which were in use 1702-07. At this scale the model represent a ship measuring 162 feet along the gun deck by 47 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 1570 burden.
The model was probably made as a preliminary design for the 90-gun ships built under the 1706 Establishment. Notable features include the large and ornate figurehead ? only provided to the large first- and second-rates - and the 'roundhouses?, just forward of the quarterdeck and behind the figurehead. It would appear that these are one of the earliest references to the 'latrines? (toilets) on a contemporary model of this date.
CA: AAA. Suggested reference in the Royal Naval Museum Catalogue (1913), pg 46 Vanguard Room (West), No 5 Case, No 2. Referred to as A Royal Naval Museum model in Anderson's catalogue, 1952.
