Description: | No. 28 of 51 (PAJ2051 - PAJ2101): inscribed by the artist on the album page, 'Karia. Japan. West Coast' and 'Karia' in watercolour in the lower right corner of the drawing. The drawing shows a country scene at the bend or possibly junction of a stream, which has a path running alongside a raised stone levee that bears a small house under trees. High wooded ground rises behind with fields to the right, with a small torii standing on their edge. A woman in a kimono, with a formal headdress, appears to be walking by the stream. To the right a bare-footed field worker in a short blue tunic and wide Japanese hat carries two buckets hanging from a pole across his right shoulder. Kariya lies on the west coast of Kyushu in the north-eastern corner of Kariya Bay under the promontory of Takaiwa Hana, which closes the bay to the north opposite Kyodomari on the western side.
