Description: | Wales 3 thick
Scale: Unknown. Longitudinal model depicting the starboard diagonal frame of a sailing vessel made entirely in wood with metal fittings. The model has been stained with a dark brown varnish applied overall and may have been mounted to a backboard at one point. The planking has been applied in two layers externally, the inner layer running vertically from the keel to the bulwark followed by an outer layer of horizontal planking which is reinforced by vertical metal straps behind the main wale upto the gunwale. It is pierced to take approximately ten guns and based upon the shape of the gunports they were probably carronades. Inboard the hull consists of a keel, stem and sternpost, deadwood and a series of horizontal longitudinal frames which are interconnected by a series of diagonal trusses. These are further reinforced by a series of large metal bolts together with a number of metal knees and riders. There is also some internal planking together with two deck beamshelfs , two wooden vertical knees and a small section of spirketting. The bow is very narrow and quite rounded and is fitted with cant planking and is pierced with two holes for the hawsepipes. The model is mounted on a modern wooden display baseboard with a pair of foam crutches for support.
CA: AAA. It is thought that this model may be the one outlined in the South Kensington Museum Catalogue (1865) pg 137 Class IV, DIV, No 202 'Represents a plan proposed by MR Spiller in 1824, for constructing a ship with a diagonal truss frame and the planking worked vertically and horizontally. This plan was not adopted'.
And the entry for the same vessel in the Royal Naval Museum Catalogue (1876) pg 29, Victory Room, Case 37, No 11 'Plan proposed by Mr Spiller in 1824'.
