Description: | Portrait of the ?Wakende Boei?, 56 guns, viewed from the port quarter. She may have been built in 1661; she was last mentioned in 1676. On the tafferel is an oval buoy with a ring in the top on a sea with ships in the distance. On the rail above are the arms of Amsterdam (three saltires on a pale) between dolphins. Two shields are on the counter, port side a lion rampant and starboard side crossed anchors for the Admiralty of Amsterdam.
It may have been based on an offset (but not in reverse) from the same original as PAH3845, which is in reverse. The latter drawing, rather a faint offset, is assigned to the year 1664 on the evidence of the watermark. PAG6208 is very well worked up with wash and on the evidence of style and watermark must be assigned to the year 1666.
Box Title: Ingram. Van de Velde 1665-1672. G 933-1054.
