Description: | ?W.V.V. (J)?
This is a portrait of the 'Groeningen' viewed from the starboard quarter. The drying sails: courses, topsails and spritsails are all loosed. The fore and the main yards are both slightly lowered and the topsail sheets are let to fly. On the ship's tafferel are the arms of Groeningen, surrounded by a wreath. On the rail above are the arms of Amsterdam, positioned between two dolphins. There are two mouldings across the stern of the ship, below the tafferel and above the upper counter, known as the slingerlijst. Between the two slingerslijsts here are crossed anchors.
This is an offset from accurate originals. It has been worked up lightly in pencil. The ship's ensign and shaking sails have been added in very rapid pencil. It has been approximately dated to 1666 by its subject and watermark. The work is signed ?W.V.V. (J)?.
