Description: | Portrait of the ?Hollandia?, 86 guns. She was built in 1665 and wrecked in 1683.
She is viewed from the starboard quarter. On the tafferel, the arms of Holland on a crowned shield. This is supported by two seated figures holding up wreaths. Above is a female figure holding a sword and a shield bearing the arms of Amsterdam. Two further shields are on the counter, starboard side a lion rampant and port side, crossed anchors, for the Admiralty of Amsterdam.
Offset, rubbed on the back, from a careful and accurate drawing, touched with a little wash on the stern decoration. It has been approximately dated based on the subject and watermark.
A similar work by van de Velde the Younger, dated 1666, showing the ship starboard quarter view was illustrated in the Muller sale, Amsterdam, Marine, 25 April 1911, no. 199.
