Description: | Nicolaus Rugendas in Augspurg
Universal equinoctial ring dial for latitudes 0-90 North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-
This dial is for northern latitudes only. The bracket moves in the grooved rim of the meridian ring on which is a degree scale divided clockwise from top [0]-90. The remainder of the obverse side carries a table of latitudes of places in Europe which is continued on the reverse. On the obverse side of the equinoctial ring is a further table of latitudes and on the reverse is an hour scale. There is a date scale, a zodiac scale, but no declination scale and the equinoxes are marked at 19 March and 22 September. There is simple foliate decoration on the stops and bridge ends.
This dial is very similar in style to AST0308. It was probably made by the third in a dynasty of makers all named Nicolaus Rugendas, who were active in Augsburg during the 17th and early 18th centuries. On the obverse side of the meridian ring, the dial is signed 'Nicolaus Rugendas in Augspurg'.
For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
