CA: AAA. Full hull model of the cutter yacht 'Alarm' (1830). Built plank on frame, the model is decked, equipped and rigged with the sails (modern replacements) set and was originally built as a working model with lead ballast. It is known that this model was raced against the ?America? (SLR0851) on a pond in a recreation of the America?s Cup race in which the two competed.
The ?Alarm?, 193 tons, was built by Inman at Lymington in 1830 for the famous yachtsman and landowner Joseph Weld (1777-1863) of Lymington and Lulworth Castle, Dorset. Originally cutter-rigged, it was rebuilt as a schooner in 1852 and was one of the most famous 19th-century British yachts. The vessel continued racing until 1867 and was not broken up until 1889. The Museum has an oil painting by Nicholas Condy, the younger, depicting a deck scene on board the ?Alarm?, circa 1842-51 (NMM ref. no. BHC4178). Also in the Collection are two trophies won by ?Alarm? during its racing career: the Queen?s Trophy for Yachting (the first awarded at the Royal Yacht Squadron?s regatta of 1838, NMM ref, PLT0257) and the King?s Cup for Yachting, 1830 (PLT0256).
