Description: | Lloyds Patriotic Fund �100 Trafalgar pattern presentation sword. Presented to Captain J.M. Mansfield (died 1813). The hilt consists of an ivory grip, diamond-knurled and a gilt lion's-skin back-piece. The quillon is in the shape of a Roman fascis, with the knuckle-guard at right angles in the form of the club of Hercules, with a snake entwined about it and attached to a loop in the lion's mouth. The triangular langets are in the form of a floral pendant and above them at the base of the grip is a rectangular plaque with a group in relief of cannon, anchor, trident, etc. Blade is polished blue steel, damascened with designs in gold. Inscribed on the blade is 'FROM THE PATRIOTIC FUND AT LLOYDS TO CHAS JNO MOORE MANSFIELD ESQ, CAPTAIN HMS MINOTAUR FROM HIS MERITIORIOUS SERVICES IN ...................... FLEETS OF FRANCE & SPAIN OFF CAPE TRAFALGAR'. There is a Trafalgar scabbard, a sword belt and original wooden box, as well as Mansfield's Captains' Gold Medal for Trafalgar. Captain Mansfield was promoted to Lieutenant 1778; Commander 1793; Captain 1794. He commanded HMS Minotaur at Trafalgar 1805 and in the expedition to Copenhagen in 1807. He died in May 1813.
