Description: | Howe / 1773
VII
West / 92 & 93 Fleet S.t / London.
This telescope has a leather-covered barrel and two brass draw tubes. The other brass fittings include a sliding eyepiece cover and an objective lens cap. The maker's name is inscribed on the smaller draw tube as 'West 92 & 93 Fleet St. London', while a second inscription on the objective lens cap 'Howe 1773' records the name of the original owner. In addition, the roman numerals 'VII' are inscribed on a number of parts, presumably as part of the manufacturing and assembly process.
The telescope is said to have been owned by an Admiral R. Gotcome Howe (1725?1799), but nothing further is know of this. It is now held in a wooden display box.
Obj lens does not fit properly in its assembly - replacement?
