Spencer Browning & Rust, / London. / DAY OR NIGHT
VIII
This achromatic telescope has a wooden barrel and two brass draw tubes. The other brass fittings include a sliding eyepiece cover, an objective lens cap with a sliding cover and a sliding sun shade. An inscription on the smallest draw tube names the maker and telescope type - 'Spencer Browning & Rust, London. DAY OR NIGHT'. In addition, roman numerals are roughly inscribed in a number of places, presumably as part of the manufacturing and assembly process. The telescope is said to have belonged to Rear Admiral John Pasco (1774?1853), Signal Lieutenant in 'Victory' at the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805.
Focal length 32 1/4"
