Description: | Medal commemorating Vernon's attack on Cartagena, 1741. Obverse: Full-length figure of Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757), (three-quarter left), wearing hat, standing on solid platform; right hand extended, baton in left, arm bent. In distance forts to the right and left, in front of which are three ships and a tree (right), and seven trees (left). Line enclosing legend. Legend: 'ADMIRAL : VERNON : VEIWING : THE : TOWN : OF : CARTHAGANA'. Exergue: ':1740 : 1'. Reverse: Two ships sailing to right, and two boats in foreground. In middle distance, a strait defended by a fort marked 'S . IAGO'; in the background (left) a town; inscribed above 'CARTHAGENA'. No line enclosing legend. Legend: 'THE FORTS OF CARTHAGENA DESTROYD BY ADM VERNON'. Exergue: '1741'. Vernon bombarded Cartagena in 1740 and an unsuccessful attempt was made to capture the city in April 1741.
