Description: | Medal commemorating Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757) and Admiral Sir Chaloner Ogle (1681?-1750), the attack on Cartagena, 1741. Obverse: Two full-length figures. Vernon (left), facing three-quarter right, wearing hat; baton in right hand, the left extended. Ogle (right), facing left, baton in left hand, the right extended. Line enclosing legend. Legend: 'ADMIRAL . VERNON . AND . SR . CHALONER . OGLE'. Exergue: Shell and two leaves. Reverse: Two ships sailing to right, towards a fort, below which is a boat. Two forts in centre connected by chain boom, behind which is a ship. In background the city in a straight line. Coastline points to letters U and H. Flagstaff on tower pointing at O, spire at K. Line enclosing legend. Legend: 'TRUE BRITISH HEROES TOOK CARTHAGENA'. Exergue: 'APRIL 1741'. Vernon bombarded Cartagena in 1740 and an unsuccessful attempt was made to capture the city in April 1741.
