Description: | Dirk, which belonged to Commander Frederick Semple (1833-1872). The hilt of the dirk consists of a slightly upturned crosspiece with acorn finials. The dirk has a lion's-head pommel and back-piece, the mane extending the length of the back-piece. There is a 'flattened' ring in the lion's mouth for a dirk knot. The white fish-skin grip is bound with three gilt wires. The steel blade is straight, flat-backed with a spear point. The obverse of the blade is engraved with foliate scrolls, the Royal cypher 'VR', a rayed crown, and further foliate scrolls. The reverse of the blade is engraved at the shoulder with the words 'DEANE & SON - 30 - KING WILLIAM ST LONDON BRIDGE', and is decorated with foliate scrolls, a foul anchor, a rayed crown, and further foliate scrolls. The black leather scabbard has a gilt top locket and chape. The top locket has a stud for a frog, and suspension on the reverse. The mounts are decorated with threads. Commander Frederick Semple (1833-1872) was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on the 22nd February 1856 and to the rank of Commander on the 1st February 1866.
