Description: | French sword. The hilt consists of a gilt brass knuckle-guard of near stirrup form, broadest near the pommel and pierced, via a rectangular block, to an upward curved quillon with lion's-head finial. The block bears an anchor superimposed on two flags in saltire and laurel wreath on either side of the guard itself. Escutcheon-shaped langets are embossed with the sun and a length of rope. The gilt brass pommel swells below a neck to a bound wreath and has a flat end. A row of studs decorates its upper edge. The black ebony grip is diagonally fluted. The blade is a slightly curved, flat-back with a broad, shallow fuller running practically the whole length.
There are traces of engraved decoration at the shoulder and a short distance above. Engraved on the obverse is a spray of foliage, a trophy of flags and foliage, and sprays of foliage. The reverse is similar to the obverse. The scabbard is black leather with two gilt brass mounts. The top locket bears a long hook each side for suspension and the chape ends in a scallop shell and is engraved with a hammered mermaid with a birfurcated tail, the two parts of which are entwined. The piece ends in a semi-circular projection bearing a punched scallop shell. The chape is plain save for two groups of two horizontal engraved threads. There is what appears to be a small arsenal mark on the obverse side of the pommel (an eagle displayed?).
