Description: | Straight-bladed dirk, the hilt of the dirk consists of a cross-guard, which tapers to the disc-shaped finials. The dirk's quillons are upturned. On the upper face of the guard, near to the blade, is a rectangular stamp containing the letters 'F T', which refers to Francis Thurkle II. The gilt brass pommel cap has bevelled corners and a prominent tang button. The dirk has a four-sided ivory grip, which also has bevelled corners. There is a plain gilt ferrule at the top of the grip. The steel blade is straight, double-edged with a broad, central fuller, and has almost certainly been shortened. The blade is undecorated and has rust stains. The black leather scabbard has three gilt brass mounts. The top locket bears a ring at the back edge. The chape is square-tipped. The reverse of the top locket has the punched signature 'Gibbins Portsth'. Presumably the scabbard was shortened to fit the blade.
