Description: | Curved bladed dirk, the hilt of the dirk consists of a cross-guard, which has inversed quillons and escutcheon-shaped langets. A brass chain links a loop on the pommel to a loop on the tip of the fore quillon; it is attached to the loop on the quillion by a copper ring. The chain then runs on to a loop on the tip of the rear quillon, it is attached to the loop on the quillion by a steel ring. The securing of the chain guard is probably not original. The leading quillion is bent. The langets are engraved with trophies consisting of a shield decorated with a saltire (diagonal cross) and two flags. The dirk is a variant of the 'Mameluke' form with a pointed, forward-swept pommel, at right angles to the back-piece of which it is an extension. The pommel is decorated with a spray of laurel and engraved threads, which sweep up to the top of the hook. The small ferrule is also decorated with engraved horizontal threads. All mounts are made from gilt brass. The white ivory grip is mostly crosshatched.
The steel blade is very curved, flat-backed with a 101mm false edge. The obverse of the blade is engraved with a spray of foliage, a trophy consisting of two flags and a spear, and a further spray of foliage. The reverse of the blade was probably decorated in a similar fashion to the obverse but the decoration has been worn away. The black leather scabbard has two gilt brass lockets. It is not certain whether a chape was originally fitted. Both lockets have a ring at the back edge and both are decorated with engraved sprays of acanthus and a ribbon of formalised laurel. The reverse of the top locket bears, on an engraved panel the words 'W. George Plymth Dock'. The style of decoration of this dirk is similar to that found on Danish dirks of the early 19th century.
