Description: | Presentation sword. The hilt consists of a gilt stirrup guard, a lion's-head pommel and back-piece, the mane extending the length of the back-piece and a white polished ivory grip bound with three gilt wires. The langets have broken off. The straight, flat-backed blade has one broad shallow fuller running to the spear point and has blued and gilt decoration. There is a black leather scabbard with one long highly ornamental gilt locket and chape. The locket has two snakes in lieu of rings (obverse) embossed in heavy relief with a wand of Aesculapius, with an oval containing a lion's head in the centre. At the top and bottom is Neptune's trident supported on each side by sprays of bay leaves. Inscribed on the hilt on each side of quillons is 'Trafalgar' and the blade is inscribed with 'J Runkel Solingen', the Royal cipher 'GR' below a crown, a figure (Mars) below 'Trafalgar' and below a crown and foul anchor. The locket is inscribed with 'Prosser. Charing Cross. London'. It is possible that this sword was presented to a surgeon because of the wand of Aesculapius (the god of medicine) embossed on the scabbard.
