Description: | Hanger, the hilt of the hanger consists of a brass cross-guard, which has disc-shaped, inversed finials and small plain langets. The hanger has a lion's-head pommel, which is inclined forward with a mask placed on a 'neck' (plinth), and a smooth back-piece. The back-piece of the hilt is engraved with the name 'T M Hardy'. The ivory grip is horizontally striated. The curved, flat-backed steel blade has one deep fuller running by the back edge for over half its total length. The black leather scabbard has a brass top locket and ring and a brass chape. The top locket is cut out to take a stud for frog suspension. The attribution of the hanger to Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy (1769-1839) is almost certainly false. See WPN1327 for a similar type of hanger.
