Description: | Stirrup hilted sword, which belonged to the Chief Officer of the Coast Guard Charles H. Spencer (active 1883-1894). The hilt of the sword consists of a gilt stirrup guard with langets. The langets are embossed with a motif consisting of a crown over a garter encircling an anchor. The sword has a fluted pommel and back-piece, which has two straight lines running down it. The sword has a black fish-skin grip. The slightly curved, pipe-backed, steel blade has a double-edged spear point. The obverse of the blade is engraved with the words 'Charles Spencer Chief Officer Coast Guard 1879'. The black leather scabbard has one gilt locket and chape. The mounts are ornamented with lines and spirals. The locket has a frog button and one ring.
Charles H. Spencer (active 1883-1894) became Chief Officer of the Coast Guard on the 22nd December 1883 and was stationed at Ballycotton between 1883-1884, at Youghal between 1884-1890, at Bovisand between 1890-1891 and at Mount Batten between 1891-1894.
