Description: | H. Bedford by Holburn Conduit
Universal equinoctial ring dial for latitudes 0-90 North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-
The dial is for northern latitudes only. The bracket moves in the grooved rim of the meridian ring on which the latitude is marked by a central line. There is a degree scale on the meridian ring and two hour scales: one on the obverse side and one on the inner-rim of the equinoctial ring. There is also a date scale (on which the months are marked by numbers), but no zodiac scale, and the equinoxes are marked at 10 March and 13 September. The bridge has shaped ends.
This is a very simple instrument, but it is interesting for having the months marked by numbers (from March) rather than by names. The signature, 'H. Bedford by Holburn Conduit', is the only wording to appear on the dial. A similar dial in the National Technical Museum in Prague has initials for the months rather than numbers.
For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
