Description: | 2 schoonen verschiet de Wit?/esquadre
Following the Battle of Scheveningen, 1653, Admiral de With left the Texel on 11 September with a large convoy for the Sound. This is the first battle at which van de Velde the Elder was certainly present in his galjoot. It is possible that the drawing was done in 1658 when de With again sailed for Denmark with a flag at the main.
A squadron of Dutch ships are shown with pendants at the fore. The Admiral is in the centre middle distance with the vice-admiral?s flag just showing on the extreme left. In the foreground is a bow view of a private ship. There is coastline in the distance.
This is a clean drawing which, were it not for the correction to the mainmast of the flagship in the centre and a vagueness in drawing of the ships in the left foreground and right distance, might be the work of the Younger. The inscription in the upper right corner is in the hand of the Elder.
