Description: | An extensive view of a large fleet of various vessels, possibly the Dutch fleet in the Vlie in October 1658 when it was assembled for the northern expedition against Sweden that culminated in the battle of the Sound.
This identification is based on the watermark: there is no other inscription or numbering, but stylistically and in terms of subject matter it is consistent with the series of drawings made in 1658 relating to the northern expedition. In port bow view on the left is a large ship lying at a buoy, flying a pendant at her ensign staff and with a small merchant ship coming alongside to starboard. To the right foreground is a kaag in stays, seen also in port bow view. Other craft shown include a wijdschip, another kaag and another small merchant ship.
Box Title: B1 Van de Velde - up to 1664.
