Description: | Pocket watch in a hallmarked silver pair-case. It has a full-plate capped fusee movement, signed and numbered, with a rack-lever escapement and plain balance. The watch has a white enamel dial with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds hand, and blued steel spade-and-poker hands. The outer case contains the watch repair paper of Edward Cant & Son, Barking Road, London. During the first part of the nineteenth century Robert Roskell produced many thousands of these watches with rack-lever escapements to a design patented by Peter Litherland in 1791. Large quantities of these were intended for export, especially to the U.S.A.
AQN: Foulkes, R K (owner). Inner case; assay marks for Chester, 1812 case-maker 'EJ' below anchor. Outer case; assay marks for Chester 1814 case-maker 'EJ'. Silver pair-cases. Full-plate movement, capped; rack-lever escapement, 30-tooth wheel, 2 slides; plain steel balance. Flat enamel dial; 15-seconds dial at VI, steel hands.
