Description: | A silver waterline model of the Dreadnought battleship HMS 'Iron Duke' (1912). The model is decked, equipped and rigged. The plaque on the base is inscribed ?RJ from CB Jutland 31 May 1916 "Primus inter Pores??. This model was presented to Admiral Sir John Jellicoe by Admiral Sir Cecil Burney as a memento of the Battle of Jutland at which Admiral Burney was second in command. Built at Portsmouth, ?Iron Duke? measured 620 feet in length by 90 feet in the beam, displacing 26,400 tons. It was armed with ten 13.5-inch guns, twelve 6-inch guns and five 21-inch torpedo tubes.
?Iron Duke? was commissioned into the fleet as flagship of Admiral Sir George Callaghan in March 1914. At the outbreak of war Callaghan was relieved of command of the fleet and replaced by Sir John Jellicoe. Jellicoe made ?Iron Duke? the flagship of the newly organized Grand Fleet. It took part in the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916, where she served in the 2nd Battle Squadron. When Jellicoe was appointed First Sea Lord in November 1916, ?Iron Duke? became the flagship of Sir David Beatty, the new commander of the Grand Fleet.
After the war, it was transferred to the Mediterranean fleet, where it again served as flagship, this time under Admiral Sir John de Robeck (1921?22). It served with the Mediterranean and Atlantic Fleets until it was paid off in 1929. It was demilitarized in 1931?32, and used as a gunnery training ship. In May 1936 ?Iron Duke? was re-commissioned and used as a base ship at Scapa Flow, where it was forced to beach during an air attack in 1939. After basic repairs, it then became a stationary depot ship until it was sold in 1946 and broken up at Faslane, Scotland.
