Description: | Scale: 1: 48. A contemporary full hull builder?s model of the passenger liner ?Antonio Lopez? (1882). The model is fully rigged as a barque, and mounted on six turned brass pillars on an original wooden baseboard. This is a highly detailed model with a wealth of fittings including a full set of boats, anchors and handling equipment, navigational equipment and four companion ladders rigged over the side.
Designed and built by William Denny and Brothers of Dumbarton, Scotland, the ?Antonio Lopez? measured 384 feet in length by 42 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 3,460 gross. Even though it was powered by a single compound inverted steam engine, its barque rig was still needed for propulsion and as a standby in the event of engine failure. It was owned by the Compania Transatlantica of Barcelona, Spain, and was designed to carry 214 in the first class, 72 in second class and 1007 in third class. The ?Antonia Lopez?, named after the owner of the company, was lost when it ran aground after having caught fire in 1898.
