Description: | Langlois AParis aux Galleries du Louvres
Augsburg dial for latitudes 0-75 North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-
The compass has 32 points marked, 16 by French initials, and North is further indicated by a fleur-de-lys. There is a brass needle to indicate the magnetic variation and the compass needle, which is blued for North, is surmounted by a brass pyramidal pivot. Engraved around the compass are three towns with their latitudes: 'Kebec [Quebec] 47', 'Lion 45.46'' and 'Bologne 44.30''. The latitude arc is divided 0-[75] and its inside edge carries a latitude: 'Vannes 47.40'.'
The obverse side of the hour-circle segment is numbered clockwise IIII-XII, I-VIII, while the inner rim is numbered 4-12, 1-8. There is decoration on the hinge and a fleur-de-lys on the outer rim of the ring marks the latitude on the latitude arc. The base of the compass and the back of the dial-plate are engraved with a table of latitudes. The list of places in the table is very widely spread; many of them are ports around the Mediterranean and in the New World such as 'Detroit de Gibaltar' (Rock of Gibraltar) 35.30' and Quito 00.18'.
The dial has a black leather square case with orange felt lining and a brass push-button clasp. The dial is signed 'Langlois AParis aux Galleries du Louvres' on the obverse side of the dial-plate. Langlois and Dubois (see AST0262) both appear to have favoured incomplete hour rings and a simple style.
