Description: | The ?Sophia?, six rate, 10 guns. She was taken from the Duke of Argyle in 1685 and made a fireship in1688.
She is viewed from slightly before the port beam. The capstan is manned and there are people in two wherries in the foreground. There are eight wreathed ports on a broadside. The ship?s figurehead is a cherub on horseback. The forechains are not shown but the position of the mast is indicated by thin pencil marks on the left. It is a rapid but accurate drawing. There are, however, some untidy corrections in the wash.
The sketch has been dated approximately based on the subject and the watermark.
Box Title: B3 Van de Velde, 548-611, 1198. 1677-1685.
